Convicted killer seeks to adopt teen

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A Swedish man serving a life sentence for killing a gay man wants to adopt an 18-year-old girl as his daughter, officials say.

The 37-year-old man, whose name was not reported, slit the throat of Johan Pettersson, 28, in 2002 because he was gay, The Local reported.

While in prison, the man married his high school sweetheart and is now seeking to adopt her teenage daughter.

"We've been together for four years," the wife, whose name was not reported, said. "He's changed a lot. But he and my daughter have come to an agreement about this together."

In his adoption request, the convict said, "I have always been like a father for her," as she has been part of his life since she was "a little girl."

"I am now asking the district court to consider my adoption request with all their heart and let me be a father to my daughter," the adoption request says.

However, nowhere in the request does the man mention he is currently serving a prison sentence.
