Female Mountie alleges sexual harassment

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- A female corporal in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has lodged a complaint of continual sexual harassment since 1991 in British Columbia.

In an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., Catherine Galliford said since she became a Mountie in 1991, she was subjected to constant sexual advances from senior officers.

"If I had a dime for every time one of my bosses asked me to sit on his knee, I'd be on a yacht in the Bahamas right now," she said.

Galliford had the high-profile position of media spokesperson for the force in Vancouver until 2007 when she went on sick leave.

She told the broadcaster she began drinking heavily before she took leave and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. She said she is planning to sue the RCMP based on her 115-page complaint.

The force hasn't responded to her accusations although an unidentified official told the broadcaster in a statement "harassment of any kind is not tolerated."

Galliford disagreed, saying complaints over the years led to retribution.

"If they can't screw you, they are going to screw you over," she said. "And that's what it became like and so I started to normalize the harassment because I didn't know what else to do."
