ROME, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A young woman was killed Friday when her car was swept away by a mudslide cause by heavy rains across central and southern Italy.

The friend survived by holding onto a street light.

Torrential downpours wreaked havoc in Rome Thursday, also killing a man who drowned in his flooded underground apartment.

Firefighters and work crews were working in the capital Friday to repair damage caused by severe flooding that congested traffic, halted subways and closed schools.
