French nuclear waste site blast kills one

NIMES, France, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- French nuclear authorities warned of a possible radiation leak in Nimes area after an explosion at a nuclear waste site near Monday killed at least one person.

The explosion at the Marcoule nuclear waste site in the Rhone Valley also injured four people, Radio France Internationale reported.

The site does not have a reactor, The New York Times reported.

While the cause of the blast hasn't been determined, French media reported the explosion occurred in a furnace inside the site.

Reports indicate the blast followed a fire in a nuclear waste storage area.
