Trial starts in Egypt 'Camel Battle'

CAIRO, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- The alleged leaders of a bloody attack on anti-government protesters in Egypt denied the charges against them on the first day of their trial Sunday.

The defendants are accused of organizing the so-called Camel Battle in which supporters of then-president Hosni Mubarak charged into the crowd at Cairo's Tahrir Square on horseback and riding camels, injuring hundreds.

The defendants include several members of Mubarak's National Democratic Party as well as the former speakers of the Shura Council and People's Assembly.

Al-Masry al-Youm said Sunday's court proceedings included wrangling between the judge and defendant Mortada Mansour, who accused a witness of perjury and insisted he had documentation to prove he was not involved in the Feb. 2 clash.
