Man killed in London by falling masonry

LONDON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A patron at the sidewalk cafe of an expensive restaurant was killed by a piece of masonry that broke loose from a building and landed on him, witnesses said.

Friends identified the dead man as Peter Westropp, 27, The Independent reported. Westropp worked in London's financial district and lived in Battersea near Le Bouchon Bordelais, the report said.

The accident occurred Wednesday evening in a neighborhood that was hit by rioting earlier in the week.

Paul Croxton, who was at a neighboring table, said he heard an "almighty thud" and felt debris hitting him.

"It was a very quiet post-riot evening, and everyone was trying to get back to normality," Croxton told the Evening Standard.

Oliver Cohen, the restaurant's general manager, said Le Bouchon Bordelais would be closed while the accident is investigated, The Independent said.
