Colombian residents say mayor should pay

BOGOTA, July 28 (UPI) -- Residents of Colombia's capital said the mayor of Bogota should pay for damages out of his own pocket in an alleged kickback scheme, officials said.

Colombia's Citizen's Ecology Network arranged a letter with 2,222 signatures addressed to Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno asking that he pay back the city with his personal estate, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.

The group, which promotes civic participation in politics, is asking Moreno to recognize his mistakes and take responsibility for his actions.

Moreno, who was suspended as mayor in May, allegedly demanded a 6 percent kickback on a transportation contract awarded to Colombian Nule.

Colombian prosecutors have charged Moreno with extortion, embezzlement and contracting without legal requirements.

The mayor, who is expected to be indicted Friday, allegedly extorted construction companies for $2.8 million during his tenure.

He could face 22 years in prison if convicted.
