Travelodge customers get spam e-mails

LONDON, June 24 (UPI) -- The U.K. Travelodge hotel chain says it is investigating a security breach of its database after customers complained of receiving spam e-mail.

The company has written to customers warning them not to respond to the e-mails that claim to offer job opportunities, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

"Please be assured, we have not sold any customer data and no financial information has been compromised," said Guy Parsons, Travelodge's chief executive.

"The safety and security of your personal information is of the utmost importance to us and as a result we are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into this issue," he said.

Computer security experts said the e-mails could be an attempt to obtain more personal data from those receiving the messages, a type of online financial scam known as phishing.

The U.K. Travelodge group is the second largest budget hotel chain in the United Kingdom and is under separate ownership from the Travelodge chain of the United States.
