Diplomats arrested for cigarette smuggling

JAGODZINIE, Poland, May 24 (UPI) -- Ukrainian authorities said Tuesday they arrested three North Korean diplomats who were allegedly trying to smuggle cigarettes into Poland.

The three were apprehended at the Polish-Ukrainian border crossing in Jagodzinie allegedly trying to smuggle 20,000 cigarette packs in the car of diplomats working in Warsaw, Poland.pl reported.

The case was taken over by the security service of Ukraine and the prosecutor's office, Poland.pl reported.

Ukrainian customs officers decided to search the car based on experience in 2009 in a similar matter. In that case, they detained diplomats who attempted to smuggle 198 cartons of cigarettes at the Belarus border. The diplomats said Belarus is a diplomatic post.
