U.N. proposes Somali courts to try pirates

MOGADISHU, Somalia, April 11 (UPI) -- Proposals for specialized Somali courts to try suspected pirates in Somalia and the region are under consideration, the U.N. Security Council said Monday.

The Security Council also urged entities affected by piracy, especially the international shipping community, to support a number of judicial- and detention-related projects through a trust fund set up for that purpose, the United Nations said in a release.

In the vote adopted unanimously, the 15-member panel stressed the need for "a comprehensive response to tackle piracy and its underlying causes by the international community," while outlining a measures to counter piracy more effectively.

The resolution also recognized the continued instability in Somalia is one of the underlying causes of the problem of piracy and armed robbery at sea off the coast of the Horn of Africa nation, the United Nations said.
