N.Z. leader calls for worldwide fundraiser

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- New Zealand Prime Minister John Key called Sunday for a global fundraiser to help the people of Christchurch and others recover from a devastating earthquake.

"It's vital we reach as many people throughout the world as possible who want to help," he said. "This isn't just New Zealand's tragedy -- the Feb. 22 earthquake affected countless people internationally.

"Every little bit helps -- every donation, no matter how small, will be welcomed."

Key said the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal would be another way for people around the world to donate to the recovery effort, complementing the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and other relief organizations, the New Zealand Herald reported.

"It's my intention that the government will work alongside these organizations to make sure the funds are used in the best possible way," he said.

Donations can be made at www.christchurchearthquakeappeal.govt.nz, the newspaper said.

The death toll from the quake stood at 147 Sunday, with more than 200 people still missing. Damage is estimated to be in the billions of dollars.
