2 dead, 1 hurt in Canada hit-and-run

COQUITLAM, British Columbia, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Two women -- a Good Samaritan and a woman she stopped to help -- were killed by a hit-and-run driver early Saturday in western Canada, police said.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported a man also was seriously injured in the 12:30 a.m. accident on Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were looking for the driver of the hit-and-run vehicle, a white 1995 Jeep Cherokee found abandoned in the Cape Horn area, the CBC said.

The victims' names had not been released.

The Vancouver Sun reported police were urging the driver to turn himself in.

The newspaper said the incident started with a sport utility vehicle spinning around after hitting a concrete barrier.

Another couple crossed the highway to help them and that's when the Jeep side-swiped the SUV, fatally injuring the two women, ages 27 and 30, and seriously hurting the boyfriend.

"You know, this is a tragedy," RCMP Staff Sgt. Mark McCutcheon told the CBC. "A Good Samaritan who stopped to help is killed and then another female is killed as well."

McCutcheon told the newspaper the Good Samaritan, whose husband witnessed the accident, was the mother of four children ages 1-10.

The husband, he said, is "terribly distraught."
