GAZA, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Ten Palestinians were injured in three Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to mortar shells fired at southern Israel, officials said.

Two Palestinian children and three women were among those injured in the airstrikes that began after midnight Tuesday and targeted sites in northern and southern Gaza, Adham Abu Salmiya, a spokesman for emergency services, told the Ma'an news agency Wednesday.

The Israeli Army said planes bombed three targets in Gaza including a tunnel in northern Gaza used to infiltrate terrorists into Israel.

The Palestinian news agency said one of the sites hit was a medicine warehouse east of Gaza city, and two missiles fell in an empty area. Further south, missiles hit a training ground used by Islamic Jihad's al-Quds Brigade and a tunnel on the Gaza-Egypt border.

"The (Israeli military) will not tolerate any attempt to target Israeli citizens and soldiers, and holds Hamas responsible for what is happening in Gaza and expects it to maintain the calm," a statement released by the army said.

Palestinians in Gaza Tuesday fired four mortar shells at Israel in two barrages. One of the shells exploded in a parking lot in the Sha'ar Hanegev regional council, damaging cars but causing no injuries. Another shell landed in a nearby field and two others also fell in open areas, the army said.
