Cuba suspends mail delivery to U.S.

HAVANA, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Cuba has suspended all mail delivery to the United States in response to new U.S. security measures.

The Cuban postal service said U.S. authorities have refused entry and returned large amounts of mail, at great cost, since stricter rules were imposed last year after the attempted mailing of explosives from Yemen, the BBC reported Saturday.

Mail between the United States and Cuba was halted in 1967 and only resumed in 2009 through third countries. President Barack Obama resumed service in a move to improve relations and boost people-to-people ties.

The Americans toughened security on air cargo after bombs hidden in printer cartridges were intercepted on planes from Yemen.
