British using camera dogs against Taliban

LONDON, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- British special forces are parachuting German shepherds wearing video cameras into Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan, military sources say.

In a tactic borrowed from the Americans, the dogs are strapped to their human handlers for parachute drops. Cameras on their heads send images of buildings and surrounding areas to special forces, The Times of London reported.

The Defense Ministry would not comment on special forces operations but did not deny the report.

The dogs are reportedly trained to attack armed people, and eight have been killed in combat.

The ministry has a policy of never commenting on special forces operations, but commanders and civilian leaders have revealed much.

Troops from the Special Air Service and Special Boat Service, its naval equivalent, have been carrying out what military sources call "decapitation" operations on Taliban commanders in Helmand and Kandahar provinces in southern Afghanistan.
