Sweden probes anti-immigrant shootings

MALMO, Sweden, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A series of shootings of minority men in Malmo may be related, Swedish police said Wednesday.

Most of the attacks have occurred just after dark, and people from immigrant backgrounds were the victims, Skane county police spokesperson J.B. Cederholm told the Swedish news agency TT and The Local.

"The two most recent shootings look exactly alike: Men of color have been shot from behind near a bus stop," Cederholm said.

Three victims were shot within a few hours Tuesday night in Malmo.

A 19-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for the shooting of the two victims around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Lindangen neighborhood.

Earlier, a 28-year-old man waiting at a bus stop was shot near the spine, but that is believed to be a separate case.

None of the victims had any known threats directed against them.

The killing of a woman in her 20s in October 2009 may have been the first in a series of related shootings. She was sitting in her car with a 21-year-old man who was wounded but survived.

"One theory is that a single assailant, or several, are focused on people with immigrant backgrounds," Cederholm said.
