Life in prison for dad who killed 3 sons

MELBOURNE, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- An Australian man who drowned his three young sons by driving his car into a reservoir on Father's Day was sentenced Friday to 33 years to life in prison.

Robert Farquharson, 41, of Melbourne could end his days as a free man, the Melbourne Herald Sun reported. Justice Lex Lasry said he had decided not to impose the maximum of life without parole because Farquharson appeared to have been a "man of good character" before killing Jai, 10, Tyler, 7, and Bailey, 2.

Farquharson's ex-wife, Cindy Gambino, sobbed as she listened to the judge.

"I don't believe it's enough. It's a life sentence for me, it should be a life sentence for him," she said.

Prosecutors said Farquharson deliberately drowned his sons to get even with his ex-wife for the divorce. The defense said he drove into the reservoir after briefly blacking out from a cough and was able to get out, only to see it sink underwater with the boys inside.

Farquharson won an appeal after being sentenced to life without parole in 2007 but was convicted again this year.
