Gallup Poll: Most unhappy with government

PRINCETON, N.J., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- More than 70 percent of the respondents in a USA Today/Gallup poll used a negative word or phrase to describe the federal government, Gallup said Monday.

The terms most frequently used by 72 percent of those asked to describe the government in the Sept. 21-22 poll were "too big," "corrupt" or "confused," a Gallup report said.

The responses were to the question: "What would you say if someone asked you to describe the federal government in one word or phrase?"

Ten percent of responses were positive, using words such as "good," and 18 percent were neutral or mixed, Gallup said.

Gallup and USA Today polling and political experts will meet Wednesday at Gallup's Washington world headquarters to give their takes on what's behind the negative views of government. The meeting will also offer analysis of what people want, or don't want, government to do for them, the Gallup report said.

The poll was based on a random sample of 981 people 18 or older, living in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Gallup said the margin of error is 4 percent.
