FORT SIMPSON, Northwest Territories, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A Northwest Territories liquor store owner has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy while he was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer.
Duncan Canvin, 52, who also served a term as mayor of Fort Simpson after leaving the police, is free on bail, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Conditions include not going near his accuser, who is now an adult, or anyone under the age of 17, police said in a statement Friday.
Canvin left the police in 1997. His accuser told the CBC Canvin also coached hockey while he was stationed at Fort Simpson, a village of about 1,200 people on the Mackenzie River 240 miles west of Yellowknife.
The man said he and other teenagers used to visit Simpson's house, where the police officer provided liquor and pornography. The man said two years ago he felt comfortable enough to confide in another RCMP officer about Simpson's behavior.
Simpson was acquitted in 1996 of molesting another boy.
