Lottery winner dies in apparent suicide

LEICESTER, England, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A 31-year-old man apparently killed himself in the house he bought after winning 800,000 pounds ($1.2 million) in a lottery in 2005. British authorities said.

Richard Long's body was found in May, but his death was only announced this week when it was released for burial, The Sun reported Friday. While an inquest will determine the official cause of death, the newspaper said Long was found hanging in his English Midlands house.

Yvonne Greenwood, Long's mother, said he called the four-bedroom house in Broughton Astley near Leicester, where he lived by himself, his "hotel." He spent most of his weekends at her home in Mountsorrel, where he had lived before winning the Lucky Dip.

"He never took his stuff from here when he moved out," she said. "He never really wanted to go."

Long continued to work as a canal maintenance engineer after winning the jackpot. He bought a Ford Focus that he was still driving at the time of his death and invested the rest of the money.
