Floods claim 6 lives in southern India

BANGALORE, India, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Heavy rains in southern India have killed six people and damaged 500 homes, officials said Saturday.

The Karnataka state government will immediately release 250 million rupees ($5.54 million) for flood relief in 13 districts hit by the deluge, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told Press Trust India.

While 12 districts will get 200 million rupees, worst-hit Gulbarga will get 50 million.

Yeddyurappa plans to hold a cabinet meeting in Gulbarga Oct. 4.

Torrential rains set off flash floods Friday in Bangalore that inundated low-lying areas, and Yeddyurappa said the government has asked the Bangalore Development Authority to desilt the Bellandur Tank at a cost of 1 billion rupees.

Accumulation of silt in the tank was a major factor in flooding southern parts of the city, he said.
