LONDON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A long-closed London Underground station has been temporarily converted into a museum, recreating its appearance as a shelter during the Blitz, officials said.
Visitors to the Aldwych station will be greeted by actors dressed in early 1940s, The Independent reported. Period advertisements hang on the walls.
The station is to be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday as Britain marks the 70th anniversary of the Blitz. Thousands of Londoners sheltered in Aldwych and other stations deep under the city during night after night of raids by the Luftwaffe between September 1940 and May 1941.
Aldwych was one of the first stations to become a shelter. It also served as a shelter for irreplaceable art works.
"We must never forget the bravery and dogged determination of the men and women who battled to keep London moving in the face of a terrifying and unremitting bombardment which sought to destroy our great city during the Blitz," Mayor Boris Johnson said.
Aldwych, which opened in 1907, closed in 1994 after officials determined repairing its elevators was too expensive. The station has been used as a setting in a number of movies.
