4th arrest made in Canadian terror case

OTTAWA, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A former "Canadian Idol" contestant appeared in court on terrorism charges Friday and a fourth person apparently has been arrested in the case, officials said.

Khurram Syed Sher, 28, of London, Ontario, the ex-TV contestant, appeared in court in Ottawa.

He was jailed along with two Ottawa men, Hiva Alizadeh, 30, and Misbahuddin Ahmed, 26. The three are charged with conspiracy to facilitate a terrorist offense.

Alizadeh is facing two other charges, including possessing or making explosives for the benefit of a terrorist group, which carries a maximum life sentence. He and Ahmed appeared in court Thursday and were remanded into custody.

Federal prosecutor David McKercher said he believed the arrest of a fourth person was made and a search warrant executed in Ottawa, but no charges had been filed yet, the Ottawa Citizen reported.

Authorities say the men conspired with three others, who are not in Canada, and have not been charged, and with persons unknown in Canada, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Dubai and Iran.
