Arrests follow Moscow 'March of Dissent'

MOSCOW, July 31 (UPI) -- A number of protesters taking part in an unauthorized March of Dissent rally in Moscow Saturday were arrested, officials said.

Young people chanting "Shame!" attempted to march down Triumfalnaya Square but were stopped by police who arrested them, put them in a bus and transported them to a local police station, RIA Novosti reported.

Russian opposition groups were taking part in the March of Dissent rally in defiance of a city government ban.

Moscow city authorities have repeatedly refused requests from groups to stage the rallies, and arrested almost 200 protesters during a march on May 31.

The action caused public outrage as riot police outnumbered demonstrators and people with disabilities and a World War II veteran were reportedly among those detained.

Several groups hold Marches of Dissent on the last day of each month with 31 days, in defense of the right to free assembly guaranteed in Article 31 of the Russian Constitution, RIA Novosti said.
