Effort on to save 'pickled' bear

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, July 22 (UPI) -- Canadian wildlife workers are trying to capture a juvenile bear that has been roaming the woods of Ontario with its head stuck in a pickle jar, authorities say.

A conservation officer said the bear likely has been unable to eat or drink and probably can only see shapes and some movements through the opaque jar, Postmedia News reported Thursday.

"The bear looks pretty emaciated from the photo I've seen," Ross Johnston of Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources said. "I don't know how he's survived this long without any water."

Wildlife workers hope to tranquilize the bear with a dart armed with a radio transmitter, so they can track the bear as the anesthetic takes effect, Johnston said.

One Ontario resident said the bear is probably in this situation because someone didn't recycle the jar properly.

"This is our fault," Sharon Paterson said, "and now we have to save the poor animal."
