KABUL, Afghanistan, July 14 (UPI) -- Three service members and five civilians were killed in an insurgent attack on a police station in Afghanistan, the NATO-led security mission reported.

ISAF Joint Command says insurgents detonated a vehicle bomb at the headquarters of Afghan National Civil Order Police in Kandahar Tuesday.

The attackers followed up the explosion with small arms, rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun fire.

The attack, the third in as many days, was repelled and the insurgents were prevented from penetrating the compound, the Joint Command says.

Tuesday night Afghan and international security forces detained a suspected insurgent on the outskirts of Kandahar City.

The joint operation was in search of a Taliban commander known to traffic in weapons and aid in bomb attacks against civilians and Afghan and coalition forces.

In Helmand province, a number of suspected insurgents were detained while security forces pursued a Taliban military commander.
