Twister hits Saskatchewan town

KAWACATOOSE, Saskatchewan, July 3 (UPI) -- Residents of the small Saskatchewan community of Kawacatoose First Nation cleaned up Saturday after a tornado destroyed several homes.

The twister was spawned by a system of powerful storms that hit the entire province with heavy rain and hail Friday night, adding to recent flooding problems, CBC News said.

A tornado touched down in Kawacatoose flattening as many as 13 homes and damaging several others, but no injuries were reported.

"Just as we were coming in the house there was another funnel cloud right over my grandmothers' house and we went racing downstairs," Errin Poorman told the Canadian Broadcast Corp.

Another resident said the twister lasted about 5 minutes and that four of her neighbors' homes were destroyed with their contents scattered everywhere.

Electrical power was knocked out on the First Nation reserve about 75 miles north of Regina, Saskatchewan.
