One guilty in big London jewel heist

LONDON, June 26 (UPI) -- A jury in London convicted one man of participating in the largest jewel robbery in British history and is still deliberating on six other defendants.

Jurors spent nine days in deliberations before finding Aman Kassaye, 24, guilty of kidnapping, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a gun, The Independent reported. His co-defendants are charged with conspiracy.

Prosecutors said Kassaye was one of two men shown on a security video entering Graff Diamonds in fashionable Mayfair in August 2009. The men pulled guns once they were inside and forced a female employee to remove jewels and watches from display cases.

The robbers got away with about 40 million pounds ($60 million) in jewelry, which has not been recovered.

Kassaye denied being in the store and said another man had been made up to resemble him. One of his co-defendants has admitted participating, but his lawyer says he was "press-ganged" by the ringleaders.

The jury is to return Monday for further deliberations.
