STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 19 (UPI) -- Crown Princess Victoria, heir to the throne of Sweden, married her former personal trainer Saturday in a lavish ceremony at the Stockholm cathedral.
While crowds estimated at 200,000 filled the area around Storkyrkan Cathedral, many Swedes were indifferent to the event, The Daily Telegraph reported. Two of the three special trains put on for the event were canceled, and Stockholmers like business student Daniel Andersson who hoped to rent their apartments were disappointed.
''I will be leaving town for the weekend," he said. "Clearly too many have had the same idea.''
The guests included Queen Margrethe of Denmark and her husband, Prince Henrik, King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Sofia of Spain. Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex and his wife, Sophie, represented his mother, Queen Elizabeth II..
King Carl Gustaf, who long resisted his daughter's marriage to a commoner, walked her down the aisle and gave her away, a break with recent Swedish custom.
Daniel Westling, 36, and the princess, 32, met eight years ago when she joined his Stockholm gym. When the couple's relationship first became public, he was mocked as an unkempt outsider with a country accent.
Now Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland, Westling has become a multilingual sophisticate schooled in royal etiquette and Swedish history and politics.
