Jack managed to get the youngster safely to the bank but then got into difficulty himself, the newspaper said.

Responding paramedics and bystanders attempted to revive Jack, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Jack was a father of two and expecting a third child with his partner next month, the Globe reported.

"He was a wonderful father, partner, son and best friend," Jack's family said in a statement.

"We are all very proud of him and love him very much. We were, as a family, looking forward to the arrival of our new baby next month."
