JAKARTA, May 14 (UPI) -- Indonesian authorities foiled a plot to assassinate President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the country's national police chief said Friday.

Police Chief Bambang Danuri said the plot was broken up by a series of police raids in recent months that targeted Muslim extremists suspected of having links to al-Qaida Aceh, CNN reported.

"Based from our investigation and the confessions of arrested terrorist suspects, we know that their target was to assassinate the president and other high-ranking state officials and guests," he said.

The U.S. news network said Indonesian police have killed 13 suspected terrorists and arrested 71 others since February.
