Child killer's day parole extended

REGINA, Saskatchewan, May 11 (UPI) -- Convicted child killer Harold Smeltzer can remain free during the day in Regina if he stays away from children, Canadian parole officials said.

Smeltzer, 54, was granted another six months of day parole by the National Parole Board, the Calgary Herald reported Tuesday.

The ruling means Smeltzer can continue to leave his halfway house unescorted if he stays away from parks, swimming pools, schools and other places where children gather, the board ruled last week.

Smeltzer has lived without incident since December 2008, when he was released from prison after serving 28 years for kidnapping and killing 5-year-old Kimberly Thompson of Calgary in 1980. Before he was imprisoned, Smeltzer also admitted to raping or exposing himself to 40 girls and women in Calgary, authorities said.

Smeltzer is a pedophile with an anti-social personality disorder that is managed through visits with a psychologist and sex offender therapy, the parole board said.

His release in 2008 sparked anger from politicians, sexual assault victims and Kimberly Thompson's family.
