Record cocaine seizure made in Latvia

RIGA, Latvia, April 22 (UPI) -- A record 445-pound shipment of cocaine was seized from a cargo ship in Latvia, organized crime officials in Riga said.

Chief Ugis Araks told a news conference 405 bricks of packaged cocaine were found concealed in a shipment of wooden parquet flooring in the ship's cargo that originated in Chile, the LETA news agency said.

Araks said the unidentified ship set out from Chile, but also docked in Bolivia, Ecuador and Holland before it arrived in Riga.

He said the shipping manifest indicated the parquet and cocaine were bound for the Russian city of Veliky Novgorod by land transport.

No suspects were immediately known, but Araks said the investigation was centered on the Bolivian shippers and the documented Russian would-be recipients, LETA said.
