Hundreds of victims were cremated in Gyegu, the hardest quake-hit town in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu.

The quake left thousands of people without food and homeless, sleeping outside at night in freezing temperatures, the BBC reported.

Authorities said the chances of finding more people alive under rubble is growing unlikely and stressed the need for more food, tents and medical supplies.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pledged "all-out effort" to rebuild the devastated area.
