Poll: adults have little time for parents

SUFFOLK, England, April 13 (UPI) -- A British poll showed many adults older than 40 said busy schedules and long distances prevent frequent visits with their parents.

The survey was conducted by Christies Care, a senior care provider in Suffolk, of 3,000 respondents, the Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The poll showed one in eight adults have not visited with their parents in more than a year.

Adults reside, on average, 66 miles away from their parents, but 12 percent of the parents see their children and grandchildren only three times per year, the poll said.

One in 10 adults speak with parents on the telephone only once every four weeks, the poll showed.

"It's clear many elderly parents and grandparents are being forgotten about as we carry on with our hectic and stressful lives. Too many are seen too little throughout the year and a significant number are left feeling isolated, with little human contact," said Hugh Gathorne-Hardy, chairman of Christies Care.

The study found, however, 36 percent of adult children are concerned for their parents' well-being.
