Conservatives lead Labor in U.K. poll

LONDON, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Britain's Conservative Party would get 40 percent of votes if an election were held now while the governing Labor Party would get only 26 percent, a poll says.

A national sample of 2,002 British adults showed the Liberal Democrats trailing both with 18 percent, an Angus Reid Public Opinion poll released Thursday said.

Conservatives scored strongest in London, the south of England, the Midlands and Wales, while Labor was on top in Scotland and within 3 points of the Conservatives in the north of England, the poll said.

The strongest showing for Liberal Democrats was in the south, where they held a 5-point lead over Labor though still trailing Conservatives by a significant margin.

Conservatives are the favorite among voters over age 55, while Labor made gains with those ages 18 to 34, the poll said.

The online poll conducted Feb. 16-17 has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points, Angus Reid said.
