Facebook party turns violent in London

LONDON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- A police spokesman said riot police broke up a London party organized via Facebook after some participants became violent.

The Metropolitan police spokesman, whose identity was not released, said several guests at Thursday night's party at a London mansion began throwing bottles and bricks at both police officers and ambulance personnel, The Guardian reported Friday.

"There was a fear for their safety because the structure was believed to be unsafe," the spokesman said. "Through loud hailers we tried to inform people that the building was unsafe and that they should leave."

The Facebook event was billed as a "youth against the banks" gathering and party organizers admitted some attendees of the event did act out inappropriately.

"A couple of people wanted to cause a scene, but it was nothing really," event co-organizer Neil Fraser told the Guardian.

"We didn't break in, we got in through an open window. It's not illegal, that's just how squatting works," Fraser's fellow party organizer, Oliver Fox, said of the mansion used for the party.
