At least nine dead in capsizing

ELURU, India, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- At least nine people were confirmed dead and others were missing after a crowded boat capsized Saturday in Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

One child was among the dead. The boat was carrying between 40 and 50 passengers, many of them believed to be Hindu pilgrims en route to the Lakshmi Narasimha Swami temple, CNN reported.

The boat capsized about 100 feet from shore. Some passengers swam to safety on the Godavari River while an undetermined number were missing, said Vani Prasad, a West Godavari district administrator.

"Rescue operations are in full swing," Prasad told CNN.
