Pope urges talks for Christians, Muslims

VATICAN CITY, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI said during a meeting with a Turkish ambassador that a better dialogue is needed between Catholics and Muslims in the world.

The Italian news agency, ANSA, said during Thursday's meeting with Kenan Gursoy, Turkey's new ambassador to the Holy See, the pope said such improved dialogue could promote trust and peace between the two religions.

Benedict said it was necessary for the Catholic Church "to forge ahead with interfaith dialogue in a spirit of mutual respect and friendship."

In addition, the pope insisted Turkey could help bring stability to the Middle East by acting as a "bridge between Islam and the West."

"The Holy See places a high priority on seeking out fair and lasting solutions to all conflicts in the region and is ready to offer its diplomatic resources in the service of peace and reconciliation,'' Benedict said.
