Man wounds wife, kills daughter, self

ALDERSHOT, England, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A British man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday after fatally shooting his 4-year-old daughter and critically wounding his wife, police said.

Police said the shootings were preceded by a heated argument between the couple at a residence in Aldershot, the BBC reported.

Police found the woman and her daughter wounded when called to the residence by neighbors who had reported a domestic dispute, the British network said. The girl died a short time later and her mother was hospitalized in critical condition.

The names of the victims were not reported but the man was reportedly 56 years old and the woman 40.

A police investigator said the couple had separated about a month ago and the shootings occurred as the woman was dropping off their daughter at her former family home, the BBC said.

"This is a tragic death of a 4-year-old child," Hampshire Constabulary Detective Inspector Darren Rawlings said. "We need to find out why this has happened and exactly what happened in the premises this morning.

"At this stage, the evidence would suggest it was a domestic incident. The person in the house has discharged a firearm. We are not seeking anyone else at the moment."
