UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon says Palestinians in Gaza feel a sense of hopelessness and are being denied basic rights by Israel.

"The quality and quantity of humanitarian supplies entering Gaza is insufficient, broader economic and reconstruction activity is paralyzed, and the people of Gaza are denied basic human rights," Ban said in a statement Sunday.

The U.N. chief issued his statement on the one-year anniversary of Israel's military incursion against Hamas forces in Gaza.

He urged Israel to end its blockade of Gaza, help Palestinian civilians rebuild communities destroyed during the incursion and agree to a durable ceasefire for Gaza.

The secretary-general urged Hamas to "bring an end to violence" and for all Palestinians to work for unity within the framework of the Palestinian Authority.
