Teens charged in blind man's beating death

EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have charged two 14-year-old boys with the beating death of a blind man this week northeast of Edmonton, Alberta.

Cpl. Wayne Oakes told the Edmonton Journal one of the youths was in custody after being arrested and charged with second degree murder Tuesday, but the second boy's whereabouts wasn't known.

An autopsy confirmed 26-year-old Hector Cardinal died from being beaten, but police didn't disclose if weapons were used.

Cardinal's body was found in a residential alley Monday night in Lac La Biche, a town of 2,800 people 140 miles northeast of Edmonton.

The RCMP learned a second man had been badly beaten around the same time and place and were trying to determine if the attacks were related. That unidentified victim was initially placed in an induced coma at the hospital because of his severe injuries, Oakes said.

"He is no longer in a state of coma, although he is still in critical condition," Oakes told the Journal.

Oakes said while publishing minors' names isn't allowed, police could seek court permission to publicly identify the fugitive teen if he isn't caught in the next few days.
