Police seize 1.5 tons of cocaine on yacht

MADRID, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- British and Spanish police found cocaine with a street value estimated at almost $600 million on a yacht bound from the Caribbean to Europe, officials said.

The British news agency Sky News, citing police sources, reported Tuesday the yacht Destiny Express was about 200 miles off the coast of Spain when it was boarded. The vessel, a 150-foot former Coast Guard ship, was searched in port and 1.5 tons of cocaine allegedly discovered on board.

Investigators believe the cocaine was being shipped to London. Its estimated street value was 375 million pounds or almost $600 million.

The raid was carried out by the London Metropolitan Police, popularly known as Scotland Yard, the Spanish National Police and other agencies.
