Man sentenced in 'honor' killing

LONDON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- A Turkish emigre living in Britain has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for drugging and torturing his teen daughter before she died in an "honor killing."

Mehmet Goren of North London was convicted of the 1999 slaying of his 15-year-old daughter, Tulay Goren, whose body has never been found, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday.

During the 10-week trial, the court heard testimony that Mehmet Goren, a Shia Muslim, attacked his then-12-year-old daughter for having a relationship with a Sunni Muslim twice her age. She ran away from home, came back and then disappeared Jan.7, 1999, the Telegraph reported.

Mehmet Goren was arrested shortly after Tulay's disappearance but allegedly lied his way out of trouble, the newspaper said.

Hanim Goren, intimidated by her husband, went along with the lie that Tulay had run away, but opened up to police in March 1999, The Guardian reported on its Web site.

"They said: 'What did you do to Tulay? Did you do it?' I couldn't take it any more and I revealed. I told the truth to police then, everything," Hanim said later.
