Rescuers seek Egypt ferry crash victims

CAIRO, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Frantic attempts were underway Saturday to save ferry passengers dumped into the Nile River in an Egypt ferry boat collision, state media reported.

The government-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported that rescuers were searching for survivors in the river near the city of Rashid but were being hampered by the narrowness of the waterway in the area, CNN said.

Al-Ahram reported three bodies had been found and six passengers had been hospitalized. It said the ferry boat, which was reportedly carrying 50 people, collided with another boat. BBC reported officials saying two ferries collided, with one sinking and the other tipping over.

The Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted the Middle East News Agency as putting the number of missing at eight while Nile News TV said 50 passengers could not be found.

Another 12 people were taken to hospitals for treatment of injuries, earlier reports indicated.
