Canada introducing online child porn laws

OTTAWA, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Canadian Internet providers would be required to alert police if they come across any Web sites linked to child pornography under a proposed law, sources say.

Citing an unnamed senior government official, Canwest News Service reported Monday that the law, to be introduced by the Conservative Party government Tuesday, would impose fines of up to $95,000 on corporate Internet service providers or up to $9,500 and six months in jail for sole proprietors who fail to report child pornography.

Canwest said the measure would also force Internet companies to safeguard evidence of child pornography and require that they report any child-porn tips they receive to the government. The companies at present are not legally obliged to pass on such information.

The news service says the proposed law is coming after study by Cybertip.ca determined that Canada is one of the leading countries in the world for hosting child-porn sites.
