Wife dies in elderly couple's suicide pact

SOMERSET, England, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- An elderly English geologist and his wife jointly attempted suicide, but the husband, who survived, faces murder charges, their daughters said.

William Stanton, 79, and Angela Stanton, 74, allegedly tried to suffocate themselves, and his wife's dead body was discovered in their home in Westbury-sub-Mendip, Somerset on Sept. 29, The Times of London online reported.

The newspaper gave no details on why the husband survived but his wife did not, or the method of suicide.

The two decided to end their lives together because they did not wish to live apart after 52 years happily married, their daughters, Susan, 44, and Jennifer, 48, said, adding that their father was severely disabled and terminally ill with bone cancer, and taking care of him was too strenuous for their mother.

William Stanton, a leading geological expert on the Mendip hills, was released on bail and is under the care of his daughters.
