European Parliament condemns DRC violence

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- The European Parliament said in an approved resolution it deplores crimes against humanity occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The European Union Parliament said in a release a resolution passed Thursday also voiced stern opposition to massacres, sexual violence and the recruitment of child soldiers by rebel forces that have taken place in the Central African country.

The parliamentary resolution calls for those individuals responsible for such crimes to be prosecuted.

The resolution also urges an end to the DRC activities of armed foreign groups such as Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda.

Since 1998, an estimated 5.4 million people have died in widespread violence in the DRC. As much as 45,000 people die monthly due the ongoing conflict, the European Union Parliament said.

Parliament members also voiced support for the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and urged the peacekeeping mission receive all necessary support to fulfill its mandate.
