Imams opposing statue in Senegal

DAKAR, Senegal, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Muslim imams in Senegal said in an organized sermon text that a large statue being constructed in the capital of Dakar has an idolatrous nature.

The BBC reported the Islamic religious leaders agreed upon a text for use in sermons Friday that denounced the Monument to the African Renaissance for the large statue's depiction of a nearly naked man, woman and child.

In addition, the imams questioned the $27 million cost of the statue given the financial struggles in Senegal.

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade is a strong supporter of the statue, saying he helped in its design and will receive a portion of the revenue from charging visitors to view it.

The BBC said North Korean workers are building the statue, which will eclipse the United States' Statue of Liberty once completed.
