Iowa lobbying for residents at Gay Days

ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Two Iowa boosters say they are using the Gay Days event at the Disneyland Resort in California to draw gay and lesbians to their state.

Joe Jennison, executive director of the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance, said the recruiting effort at the three-day event at the Anaheim tourist site this week was intended to highlight the legality of gay marriage in Iowa, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported Saturday.

"We want people to know that if the California Legislature is unwilling to take the step to give gay couples the right to marry, then please consider coming to Iowa where we will gladly welcome you with open arms," Jennison said of the recruiting effort that will run through Sunday.

Eric Heinkel, a convention sales manager for the Iowa City Coralville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said several Iowa businesses and churches were prepared to assist the gay community.

"I've always found Iowans to be open," Heinkel told the Register at the Disneyland event Friday. "It's kind of surprising that it (gay marriage) is such a big deal here."
